Islamic Bank Savings Account in Qatar: What You Need | Finspire
By Almaz Ruslan, 29 Sep 2026
Open an Islamic bank savings account in Qatar without moving your salary. Documents, deposits and salary certificate rules at QIB, QIIB, AlRayan and Dukhan.
Most people assume saving with an Islamic bank savings account in Qatar means moving their whole salary over. It doesn't. You can open one on its own and keep getting paid exactly where you're paid now.
The deposit usually isn't the hard part either. The paperwork is. More specifically, one piece of paper: the salary certificate.
Here's what four of Qatar's main Islamic banks ask for, what they publish, and what we confirmed by phone.
First of all, let's get this straight.
You don't have to move your salary
Your salary account and your savings account are different things. Your salary account, tied to WPS, is the current account your employer pays into. A savings account sits alongside it, at the same bank or a different one.
A salary certificate is not a salary transfer. A certificate is a letter from your employer confirming what you earn. Some banks ask for one as proof of where your money comes from, even when your salary stays at another bank.
None of the four banks below needed a salary transfer to open a savings account.
Confirmed via phone enquiry to each bank's call centre, September 2026.
Two more things to know
The first deposit is not the minimum balance. The first is what you put in to open the account. The second is what you have to keep in it. They're often different numbers.
Returns aren't fixed. Islamic savings accounts here work on a profit-sharing (Mudaraba) basis. The bank invests your deposit and shares the profit with you, so what you earn can change.
The banks are listed alphabetically below. The order isn't a ranking.
AlRayan Bank
Documents
QID and passport.
Salary certificate
Required. If you don't have a salary of your own, AlRayan won't open the account.
First deposit and minimum balance
First deposit QAR 50,000. Minimum balance QAR 20,000.
Good to know
Investment accounts are handled by a separate investment team.
Confirmed via phone enquiry to AlRayan Bank's call centre, September 2026.
Dukhan Bank
Documents
QID and passport.
Salary certificate
Not required, when we called to check.
First deposit and minimum balance
First deposit QAR 25,000. No minimum balance on the standard savings account.
Confirmed via phone enquiry to Dukhan Bank's call centre, September 2026.
Good to know
Dukhan also publishes two higher-profit savings accounts. These are separate products with much bigger entry points.
Faseel: expected profit rate of 2.5% a year. Minimum balance QAR 100,000. More than one withdrawal in a month drops you to the regular savings rate. One Faseel account per customer.
Exceptional Savings: expected profit rate of 3.25% a year, paid quarterly. Minimum deposit to open QAR 200,000. One withdrawal a quarter, up to 25% of the balance.
These are expected rates as published by Dukhan Bank, checked 8 October 2026. They aren't guaranteed and they change. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
QIB (MISK Savings Account)
Documents
QID and passport.
Salary certificate
Not required, when we called to check.
First deposit and minimum balance
First deposit QAR 10,000, paid within one working day, online or at a branch. No minimum balance.
Confirmed via phone enquiry to QIB's call centre, September 2026.
Good to know
You open MISK in the QIB mobile app as a new user. QIB's standard savings account works differently. Its website lists a QR 20,000 minimum deposit for expats and an employer certificate with salary details. So the account you pick changes what you need.
QIIB
Documents
Original, valid QID. You need to be at least 18, and QIIB's savings account page asks you to visit a branch.
Salary certificate
Required. If you don't have a salary of your own, QIIB asks for your sponsor's salary certificate plus a letter explaining where the funds come from.
First deposit and minimum balance
First deposit QAR 20,000. Minimum balance QAR 20,000.
Good to know
Online, QIIB lets you open term and fixed deposits only.
Salary certificate, deposit and online details confirmed via phone enquiry to QIIB's call centre, September 2026.
No salary of your own?
This is where most guides go quiet. If you're in Qatar on a family sponsorship without your own income, it depends on the bank.
Some won't open a savings account at all. AlRayan needs the applicant's own salary certificate.
Some assess you on your sponsor's salary instead. QIIB asks for your sponsor's salary certificate plus a source-of-funds letter.
Some didn't ask for a salary certificate at all. Neither QIB's MISK account nor Dukhan's standard savings account did when we called. So this is at least the lowest entry point.
At a glance
Bank | Salary transfer needed? | Salary certificate | First deposit | Minimum balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
AlRayan Bank | No | Required (your own salary) | QAR 50,000 | QAR 20,000 |
Dukhan Bank | No | Not asked | QAR 25,000 | None |
QIB (MISK) | No | Not asked | QAR 10,000 | None |
QIIB | No | Required (sponsor's accepted with a source-of-funds letter) | QAR 20,000 | QAR 20,000 |
Requirements change, so check with the bank before you go.
