How to Switch Your Salary Account to an Islamic Bank in Qatar | Finspire

By Almaz Ruslan, 11 Sep 2026

A realistic step-by-step guide, reality check for you, this takes AT LEAST two to three months, not an afternoon.

This describes the process as it commonly runs. Your bank's requirements and your own circumstances will differ, so confirm each step with your bank and your HR team before acting on it.

If you've decided to change your salary account in Qatar and move it to an Islamic bank, the mechanics are straightforward but the timing isn't instant. Two things control your timeline: how fast you can clear your existing facilities, and how quickly WPS updates on the employer side. Here's the realistic sequence.

Before you start: three things set your timeline

Your credit card, any outstanding cheques, and any loan or financing at your current bank all need clearing before that bank will issue your closing paperwork. Start here, not at the new bank.

Step 1: Clear your credit card

Pay the balance to zero and submit a formal cancellation request. Banks commonly hold a security period after cancellation, often cited as around 45 days, though the exact figure sits in your card's own terms, so confirm it when you cancel. Get written confirmation once the card and account show zero liability.

Step 2: Deal with your cheques

Return any unused cheque leaves. If you've issued post-dated cheques to anyone, and a landlord is the most common case, you'll need those back before the bank will close things out. If your tenancy renews mid-process, starting two to three months ahead gives you time to retrieve the outstanding cheques and settle with your landlord by cash or transfer instead. If any cheques are lost, notify the bank in writing straightaway and complete their declaration.

One thing worth knowing in advance: a new bank may not issue you a cheque book immediately. Many require evidence of two to three months of salary credits first, so plan around that gap rather than assuming continuity.

Step 3: Settle any loan or financing

Repay it fully, or ask your new Islamic bank whether they offer a Shariah-compliant buyout of the outstanding balance. Either way, get a formal settlement letter confirming zero liability.

Step 4: Apply for the NOC, but move your balance first

Once the above is clear, apply for the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your current bank. Here's the part that catches people out: the bank typically closes your current account the moment it issues the NOC, with no gap in between. Move any remaining balance out before you apply, to a savings account, or elsewhere, so the current account closes clean. Note the processing time your bank quotes when you submit.

Step 5: Open your new account

Bring your Qatar ID, a recent salary certificate, your employer letter, and the NOC. If the NOC is still processing, bring proof that you've applied along with your application reference. Some bank officers will want to see the physical certificate, so be ready to explain that it's in progress.

On holding two accounts during the switch.

You'll hear that you can only have one current account in Qatar. What's actually fixed is that your employer can register only one salary destination in WPS, the salary file carries a single account per employee, so your pay can't be split or run to two banks at once. Separately, most banks tie their salary-transfer account benefits to your salary actually arriving with them, and treat a salary-transfer account at another bank as a breach of those terms. The practical effect is the same one you've been told about. Savings accounts aren't affected, and holding both current accounts briefly while the switch completes is normal.

Step 6: Redirect your salary through WPS

Give your new account details, including your IBAN, to your employer's HR or payroll team along with your salary certificate and a transfer authorisation letter. They'll update the Wage Protection System on their end. As of September 2026, employers are required to complete WPS wage transfers within seven days of the due date under Minister of Labour Decision No. 50 of 2026, which is useful for sanity-checking the timing if your first salary at the new bank seems slow.

Step 7: The cleanup nobody plans for

Once your salary is landing in the new account, work through everything else tied to the old one: utility bills, telecom, insurance premiums, subscriptions, and any standing instructions. These don't move automatically, and this is the step most people forget until something bounces.

Wrapping up the old account

In practice this happens alongside the NOC, so by now it's mostly confirmation. Return any leftover debit cards or bank property and keep the final statement showing zero balance.

Documents you'll need

  • Qatar ID, and passport

  • Recent salary certificate addressed to the new bank

  • Employer letter confirming the salary transfer

  • Zero-balance credit card statement and cancellation confirmation

  • Cheque return acknowledgement, or a lost-cheque declaration if applicable

  • Loan settlement letter, if relevant

  • NOC from your current bank, or proof of application in progress

  • New account details and IBAN

Common requirements, some banks ask for additional forms, so confirm before you start.

One more thing

Everything here applies just as much if you're moving between two conventional banks or two Islamic banks. Where you're going changes nothing about the clearance, NOC, and WPS mechanics.
