The Qatar Resident Finance “Audit” | Finspire
By Almaz Ruslan, 15 June 2026
Been here a while? A once-a-year check on where your money actually stands.
1. Do you have a real number for your monthly surplus (or deficit)?
Income minus expenses (rent, Kahramaa, school fees, transport, remittances, lifestyle). Years in, lifestyle creep is the silent killer. Finspire is built for exactly this, to keep you on track for your own financial freedom.
2. Have you separated "savings" from "money that's just sitting there"?
Cash in a current account isn't a plan. Review how much you hold, where, and whether any of it is working toward a goal. Separate emergency savings, sinking fund, and investment for retirement, education, and legacy.
3. Are you still overpaying to send money home?
If you've used the same exchange house or app for years, re-run the comparison. Total cost, fee plus the exchange-rate margin, shifts over time, and loyalty rarely pays.
4. Is your bank still the right fit for you?
Habits stick for years. Re-check whether your bank suits how you now live, Islamic vs conventional, fees, digital experience, transfer costs. You can hold accounts at more than one, but changing salary current account is a tricky one, that can take up to 6 months to change banks (We’ve gone through the pain, so you don’t have to)
5. Is anyone protected if something happens to you here?
Does your family know where everything is, and is your situation documented? Long-term residents often build real value in Qatar, with multi-generation calling this place home. Are they all protected, and have sufficient coverage to live by in case anything happens to you?
6. Do you understand how your EOSB is actually calculated?
It's held by your employer and paid only when you leave, you don't control it in the meantime.
It's calculated on your basic salary only, and after one full year you're owed a minimum of three weeks' basic wage per year (pro-rated). Most people overestimate by assuming their full salary counts.
Check with your HR based on your employment contract, especially if you have had an increment. Different company does it differently.
7. Is your EOSB your whole retirement plan, by accident?
Many long-term expats rely on their gratuity as a retirement savings without ever deciding to. If you left Qatar this year, would that lump sum actually support the life you're planning?
8. What's your actual exit plan for your money?
When you eventually leave Qatar, what happens to your EOSB, final settlement, local accounts, and any assets? "I'll figure it out then" is the most expensive plan there is. Sketch the sequence now. It’s not too late.
